Bruce Donald McElroy, 89, of Brooksville, FL passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 4th, 2013. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, March 11th, 1924, the son of Raymond and Hazel McElroy. Bruce graduated from Springfield College with a BS in Group Work and Community Organization. He served in the Navy in World War II and married his wife, Hazel Newton on September 6th, 1947. Bruce will be greatly missed by his wife Hazel of 66 years; his children, Don & (Suellen) McElroy, Cindy McElroy, 2 grandchildren; Erin McElroy and Brittany (Wesley) Copeland and 2 great grandchildren. Bruce worked as an executive with the Boy scouts of America for 38 years in Connecticut, Ohio, NJ, NY and PA. His faith was an important aspect of his life as demonstrated through participation and service at his local church. Bruce and family retired to Florida in 1988. Bruce stayed active working as a Deeds Restriction Officer for the Brookridge Community for 10 years. He also served as a volunteer for several local community organizations including: Co-founder and President of the Pennsylvania Club in Brookridge, officer and member of the Lion’s Club, Sheriff’s Yes Board (Youth Education Services) for more than 10 years, past president and volunteer for 25 years for the Oak Hill Hospital volunteer association; recently achieving his 10,000 hour service mark. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 9th at Spring Hill United Church of Christ in Spring Hill, FL.
