Nelmi I. (Vainio) Ames, age 95, of Spring Hill, FL, passed away on January 17, 2024. She lived the major part of her life in Abington, MA and Spring Hill, FL, moving to Spring Hill with her husband in 1984. She and her late husband, Rex, were married for 71 years.
She attended Monson Academy in Monson, Maine, Girls High School in Boston, MA and graduated from the Andover Institute of Business. In her earlier years, while living in Boston, MA, she was employed in the office at the Cadillac & Oldsmobile dealership of the late Governor Alvan T. Fuller. In later years, Nelmi worked in the Executive Office for Shaw's Supermarkets of New England and taught secretarial courses at Andover Institute of Business. She also taught adult evening speedwriting and secretarial classes at Brockton and Hull High Schools in Massachusetts.
Nelmi was a former member and Secretary of the Abington Republican Town Committee and assisted in numerous campaigns. She was also a Member of the Republican Women’s Club and served on several committees at the First Parish Congregational Church in Abington, MA.
While living in Spring Hill, she was a former member of the Spring Hill Civic Club and the Massachusetts Club. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Suncoast Senior Club, and the Happy Social Senior Club. For several years, she worked as an assistant clerk at the election polls. Nelmi enjoyed dancing, especially the Viennese Waltz and Polka, with her husband, Rex, as well as trips to the beach, bike riding, traveling, and nature walks. She enjoyed her most favorite 􀆟me of year, Christmas, with her husband and son.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, Rex, and their beloved son, Mark. She is survived by her two grandsons, Tyler, and his wife, Nikki, and Zachary, and his wife Yasmeen, as well as several nieces and nephews.
