Thomas Liburd Smith Jr. of Spring Hill, Florida passed away on August 4, 2023. Thomas was born on March 23,1947 to Thomas Liburd Smith Sr. and Elizabeth McDonald Smith in Queens, New York. After Thomas graduated from Uniondale High School, he went on to study Education at CW Post College, in Greenvale, NY.
After graduating with a master’s degree in education from CW Post College, he taught at the same elementary school his mother did, East Side Elementary in Brentwood, NY until his retirement in June 2002. During his tenure, Thomas believed that learning should be fun and made each lesson engaging and hands-on. Teaching for him was an honor and a privilege.
Aside from his love for education Thomas had a great passion for pigeons. He was the founder of Ponderosa America that led the charge in flying and breeding pigeons in the United States. He was also an internationally known pigeon writer who traveled throughout Europe and the United
States to interview and write about the world’s most renowned pigeon fanciers.
Thomas was a beloved husband and devoted father. His children enjoyed his witty sense of humor and his vivid story telling. He had an innate ability to make a basic story so vivid you felt you were part of a cinematic masterpiece. His children also enjoyed his culinary skills which included big breakfasts and traditional Thanksgiving meals.
Thomas fought his battle against Cancer for many years. Despite this he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his entire journey of life, he remained good-hearted and had a great ability to make others smile. His sense of humor will be missed.
Thomas is survived by his wife GiGi, five children Tammy, Thomas, Erica, Tamiko, and Tristan, and his two grandchildren Thomas and Ethan. Thomas is predeceased by his parents Thomas Liburd Smith Sr., Elizabeth McDonald Smith, and his brother Michael Smith
